People often ask us when the best time is to come to the Maasai Mara. Our honest answer: there is no bad month. The lions, elephants and giraffes live here all year, and every season has something of its own. What changes is the colour of the land, the number of visitors and what you need in your bag.
One thing surprises many first-time guests. The Mara sits at around 1,500 to 2,100 metres above sea level, so it is not as hot as people expect. Early mornings can be fresh, often 10 to 15°C, and by midday it is usually warm and sunny, somewhere between 25 and 30°C.
June to October: the dry season and the Great Migration
This is the season most people picture. The grass turns golden, animals gather near water and they are easier to spot. From around July, the herds of wildebeest and zebra arrive from the Serengeti, and the famous river crossings usually happen between August and September. It is a spectacular time to be here, but also the busiest, so book early.
The mornings are cold in these months, especially on an open vehicle at sunrise. Dust is part of the deal, too.
November and December: the short rains
Short showers, often in the afternoon, turn the plains green again. The crowds are gone, the light is beautiful for photography and migratory birds arrive from Europe. Most days still have plenty of sunshine for game drives.
January and February: warm and quiet
This is a lovely, underrated time. The weather is warm and fairly dry, the resident wildlife is all around, and the Mara feels calm. It is a good choice if you want great game viewing without the busy migration season.
March to May: the green season
The long rains bring the heaviest showers, usually peaking in April. The landscape is lush, the birdlife is at its best and you will often have sightings to yourself. Some tracks get muddy, so expect a little adventure. It is also the season with the best value.
What to wear on safari
The secret is layers. You will start a game drive in a jacket and end it in a T-shirt.
If you fly in on a small plane, pack a soft bag. Light aircraft usually allow around 15 kg per person, including hand luggage, so check with your airline before you travel.
